Basic Training Bureau Information
History
In 1968, the "Law Enforcement Training Act" was passed by the New Mexico
Legislature. This legislation established the "New Mexico Law Enforcement
Academy" which administered and conducted Basic Law Enforcement Training
in Santa Fe.
This legislation set the qualifications for admission to the "Basic
Law Enforcement Training Academy" and set the requirements for certification.
It also set the requirements for "Certification by Waiver." It included
requirements and eligibility for In-service Law Enforcement and radio
dispatcher training.
In 1987 the agency was reorganized into the "Law Enforcement Basic Training
Academy Bureau" and the "Advanced Training Bureau." In 1987, legislation
created the New Mexico Department of Public Safety. The Law Enforcement
Academy was integrated into this new agency as a Division of the Department
of Public Safety.
The Law Enforcement Basic Training Bureau is mandated to provide Basic
training to two target groups:
- The first category includes the newly or first time employed officer
that needs basic training.
- The second category is the newly elected sheriff who has not
been previously certified.

standards for ourselves and expect no less of ourselves as we lead by
example.
