The Motor Transportation Police Division (MTPD) of the Department of Public
Safety (DPS) is the designated lead agency for motor carrier safety and
size and weight enforcement in New Mexico. In addition to enforcing commercial
motor vehicle laws and regulations, MTPD is the first line of defense
in New Mexico against threats to homeland security from individuals utilizing
commercial motor vehicles as a means of terrorism. |

The primary mission of the Special Investigations Division is to protect
the safety and welfare of citizens by investigating violations of criminal
and administrative law and through enforcement of the State's alcohol,
tobacco and gaming (gambling) laws. |

The Law Enforcement Academy web site is provided as a service to the
law enforcement agencies, officers, and citizens of New Mexico. The New
Mexico Law Enforcement Academy establishes rules, policies, qualifications,
and standards for the employment, certification, and training of law
enforcement officers and telecommunicators. |

All search and rescue incidents in New Mexico are coordinated by the
New Mexico State Police Division. The primary resources for these
incidents are volunteers. In the 20 years since the search and
rescue law was passed, these volunteers have been activated thousands
of times. Hundreds of people owe their lives to these unselfish
citizens. |

The New Mexico Gang Task Force (NMGTF) is the largest
organized task force in the State dealing with gangs as a multi-jurisdictional,
multi-agency entity. The NMGTF's main goal is to provide federal,
state, local and tribal agencies with training, information, and funding
to enhance interdiction and enforcement efforts with the goal of reducing
criminal gang activity, including narcotics trafficking, throughout
the State of New Mexico. |

The New Mexico Mounted Patrol (NMMP) is an unfunded state agency created
by New Mexico State Law and staffed by certified volunteer police officers.
The Mounted Patrol is not a division of the State Police but is an
independent state agency that can be called upon to assist any law
enforcement agency and serve anywhere in the state. Mounted Patrol
Troopers may be called out by the Governor, the Chief of the State
Police, or by any local or county police agency. |
