DWI Checkpoints

Sobriety checkpoints have been an effective law enforcement tool in New Mexico since 1991 with the creation of coordinated efforts, such as Operation DWI. Checkpoints are conducted in every community across the state, especially during dangerous holiday weekends. At checkpoints, police officers stop and observe drivers for signs of impairment under court-ordered rules that ensure fairness. Drivers who appear to be impaired by alcohol or drugs are pulled over for further testing. For sober drivers, the interruption is usually minimal.

Based on national and local research, these programs are proven effective in influencing behavior.

Beginning June 1, 2007, the Department of Transportation initiated the 100 Days & Nights of Summer campaign with the help of officers from more than 50 law enforcement agencies throughout the state, including NMSP.

Last year, traffic crashes claimed 173 lives in New Mexico during the months of June, July, August and September. 69 of those fatalities were alcohol-related.

New Mexico law enforcement will be doing all it can to reduce death and injury due to DWI. New Mexico State Police intend to conduct more than 100 DWI checkpoints during the 100 Days & Nights of Summer campaign. Across the state law enforcement agencies will increase DWI checkpoint and saturation patrol activity to deter drunk driving and arrest those who choose to drive after drinking too much.
